So I went to start up a Virtual machine and it wouldn’t start up.

The error I got was

A general system error occurred: The system returned an error. Communication with the virtual machine may have been interrupted.

Oh great I’m thinking, this is the same error that the R2 bad patch was causing.

Well I narrowed it down to a problem with ESX1 and yet other machines could start virtual machines just fine.

After a bit of searching I found a command to restart the management service on the ESX server.

Logged on to ESX1

Then typed

service mgmt-vmware restart

Saw the service restart, and now I am able to start virtual machines just fine.

  6. You saved me! Its Sunday morning and one of my servers would not power-on after I had to do a hard power-off on the vm. I needed a quick answer to this problem and you had it. Thanks!

  7. Had same issue, but needed a solution that did not require me to log on to ESX server itself.
Tried this: From VMWare Infrastructure Client I disconnected the ESX Server and then reconnected it. After that I was able to power up the affected VM as normal.

  8. U are a star!

  9. Wow Thanks!! I just had this issue and your suggestion worked for me.

  10. Running our setup in a HA cluster with virtual center.

I also had to restart the vmware virtual center service too, but other from that, it just worked fine. simpel error, even easier fix

  11. You are the man! I couldn’t get our VM web server to start. Once I restarted the vmware management service the vm started without incident.

  13. I’m having the same problem on one VM, if I run command “service mgmt-vmware restart” on the ESX host, is it going to affect other VMs that are running on the same ESX now?

  17. It didn’t work at first. Then suddenly all of my machines showed (disconnected) in virtualcenter. It turned out my storage array had crashed.
